Back to the city's oldest market

A friend suggested the city's oldest market months ago, and this week I finally went. I kept a paper notebook this time, writing down the time and the light for every roll.

On the way home the train was nearly empty, so I reviewed the day's notes and planned the next trip. The path was muddy and longer than the map suggested, but the view at the end made up for it.

Most of the morning went into watching street corners; I took fewer frames than usual, but each one felt deliberate. By noon the crowds arrived, so I walked further along the path, where street corners were still undisturbed.

Shooting with a 50mm lens meant I had to get closer than I am used to, which was uncomfortable at first. I sat on a bench for almost an hour, just watching night trains change as the clouds moved.

The light was soft, and street corners kept pulling my attention away from anything I had planned to photograph. Working with a 50mm lens forces you to slow down. You think twice before pressing the shutter, and that changes the pictures.

I will probably come back in a few weeks, when the season turns.
